Today, my sister and I went shopping. Our idea was to head out in the early afternoon and spend about four hours walking around the stores. We headed out in the early afternoon and spent about two hours in the stores and then admitted to each other that we were tired and went home.
We tried to analyze what finished us off so quickly and decided that there are just too many things to look at in a department store. After a while, it all begins to look the same. And, much to our dismay, a lot of it belongs to another type of shopper…about 30 years younger with a whole lot of disposable cash.
After a brief relaxation period in my sister’s living room, we set off again for dinner at a restaurant that she enjoys, and I wanted to try. We had a lot of fun sitting outside conducting some serious people-watching. I had a great piece of fresh halibut with a side of vegetables and when we got back home, some fresh fruit…very few points, not too expensive and free entertainment.
Tomorrow, we are going to head out early and visit some new, smaller stores. Let’s see if we can make it last longer than two hours.
Talk to you soon.

Take a Memo
I’m in LA visiting my sister and arrived last evening. It’s been a fun-filled day of doing very little. We got up this morning and headed out for a one- hour drive to the stable where she keeps her horse, Memo.
I hadn’t had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Memo before, as he is a new addition to her family. My sister, Jill, has been riding horses for over 40 years and her previous horse passed away earlier this year at the age of 24.
I was impressed with Memo’s memory…for food. He was just like me before Weight Watchers. When we arrived, he knew that my sister would give him a peppermint. He was begging, striking his foot on the ground, repeatedly, until he got his treat. I checked to see if it was because he had a breath issue, but my sister assured me that he just liked the taste.
When he was done exercising, he knew he was going to the paddock to graze on the grass. He tried to make a break for it but Jill knew he was going to do it and had him under control.
His last food move was his best. When Jill was finished with her chores, which included brushing him, she leaves the barn and loads her car. Then, she walks back to his stall and he can hear her feet hitting the gravel. He begins grunting and whinnying because he knows that he will get carrots. And, six carrots later, we were on our way.
Mr. Memo has his food triggers, and they have become habits. Although he weighs about 1000 pounds, his habits aren’t making him overweight. I couldn’t say the same about me, so I joined Weight Watchers.

Happy 80th festivities
Today, we went to a close friend’s 80th birthday party in Tiburon. When we left our house, it was 94 degrees. When we arrived at our destination, 25 minutes later, it was 78 degrees and breezy. Perfect weather for an outdoor party and since it was a surprise, it was even more perfect.
The menu featured grilled chicken and fresh fruit, among other things, so I was all set. Then, the homemade chocolate frosted yellow birthday cake appeared. I decided, based upon all the “oohs and aahs” that I would have a small slice. It didn’t disappoint. It was well worth the allocated points.
As I am heading out of town tomorrow, I finished off the last piece of flank steak from several nights ago and my husband had some of the leftover Chinese food from last evening. The combination of a warm summer evening and a big afternoon of celebrating left us more tired than hungry. We need a lot more days like today.

The case of the Chinese restaurant...solved
It was too hot to cook. I shouldn’t be complaining, since I have been complaining about the rain and the cold in other postings. I’m happy about the weather except when it comes to heating up my kitchen with the oven and/or stove usage.
Since moving to Novato, my husband and I haven’t found a place to go for Chinese food. We needed a “resident expert” so at our last Weight Watchers meeting, I checked in with my buddy, Nora, for her advice in this matter. She recommended China Garden, and that’s where we went.
My meal began with air-conditioning. The restaurant was the perfect temperature, and I enjoyed the first cool moments of the day. Although our house is air-conditioned, I “cheaped out” and didn’t turn it on.
I ordered the beef with green beans and a side of white rice. There was enough food for three people in my order, so I brought the leftovers home. While I’m visiting my sister next week, my husband will have plenty of food, including his own leftovers, for a couple of meals.
Now that I’m back home, my house has cooled down to a very pleasant temperature, so I won’t have to think about the air conditioner. What I saved by sweating through today, I put towards my great meal at China Garden.

This is my 250th post...in case you are counting
Next week I’m going to LA to visit my sister for a few days. I will be missing my Tuesday weigh-in, but some things can’t be helped. I am confident that when I return, I will be lighter than my weigh-in this week.
We have been planning our adventures…light duty stuff like movies and going out to lunch. She knows that I enjoy certain foods every day, like Greek yogurt, fresh fruit and Nature Valley Honey and Oats granola bars and although she is skinny, she likes them, too. So, my breakfast and snacking is taken care of without missing a beat.
I will miss my Tuesday walk to Weight Watchers with my husband. He is staying home with our dogs, so that I can sneak off and play. I look forward to our Tuesday mornings on the “trail” which is really the road but sounds more exciting as a trail. We’ll have to walk twice as much when I return.

Veggie rainbow
Late work evening for my husband equals eating alone for me. Sometimes, I just get too hungry to wait. My plan for dinner included finding as many colors as I could in the form of vegetables and loading them on my plate. I didn’t feel like cooking protein, so I was building the meal around Safeway deli turkey.
You had to see the results…positively rainbow-like. I made a sweet potato, asparagus, roasted red pepper, onion, and avocado. In the middle of it was the turkey, which almost was anti-climatic because it was beige.
Low points, high aesthetics, and great taste made Jane a happy diner.

30, 40, 50...they are just numbers
This is week 38 of Weight Watchers and weigh-in day. It seems like the weeks fly by and I’m always writing about weigh-in day. I lost one pound today, for a total of 29.2 pounds.
But, wait, there’s more. When the Weight Watchers eTool told me that I had lost 29.4 pounds, I went back through the manual calculations done in the meetings and discovered the .2 pound error…in my favor. I have been pretty excited about the .2 ever since this morning. I’m not even sure why.
I am now .6 pounds away from the elusive 30- pound milestone and that’s looking pretty easy to achieve. Once I hit it, then I’ve decided that the next milestone will be 35 pounds. It’s easier for me to manage the five- pound increments than to think about my long-term goal of 50 pounds.
It’s clear that the name of this blog is 50 pounds in 50 weeks. And, it is clear that it will not happen in 50 weeks. I’m planning on 30 pounds in 40 weeks, so I will be looking at sometime in 2011 to achieve my original goal.
As always, time is going to pass regardless, so I’ll be shrinking along with it.
